Zirconia-based ceramics have a high strength and, therefore, restorations can be cemented with traditional cements or bonded with resin cements. If greater retention to tooth structure with minimal marginal leakage is required, bonded cementation with resin cements is recommended.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different materials containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) on the bond strength to yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic.
The best procedure for cementing zirconia restorations is the combination of sandblasting with aluminium oxide (Al2O3) at 50m and Panavia F2.
Bonding to zirconia relies on alumina sandblasting to create surface texture, Dr. Lawson says. It also requires the use of a different primer, 10-Methacryloxy dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), to chemically bond to zirconia. The MDP primer works through a phosphate-based bonding site on the zirconia.
Resin cement is recommended for the luting agent of the monolithic zirconia crowns.
One effective solution for repairing chemically inert zirconia frameworks is to strongly chemically bond them with the composite resin via surface modification. Thus, the bonding strength between the zirconia and composite resin determines the performance of dental restoration.
To bond zirconia, the use of airborne-particle abrasion with 50-m alumina (Al2O3) at 0.1 to 0.25 MPa in combination with a phosphate monomer-containing adhesive resin is recommended until further studies become available. Dental dam isolation is also recommended during zirconia bonding.
The key to long term bonding of zirconia is the use of a primer that contains 10-MDP. The two cements that I like to use currently are Panavia V (Kurrary) and SpeedCem plus (Ivoclar). With Panavia, the 10-MDP molecule is integrated in their primer.
