Welcome to the Nautical Institute's webinar on S mode. The Institute has noted a significant concern among members since the 1990s regarding the variety of onboard navigation systems, which require Mariners to quickly adapt to different designs. Initially, the complexity was mostly related to radar, but now the range of navigation systems has grown tremendously, including integrated navigation systems, radars, and various sensors. It is mandated by the IR SEM code and STCW that all Mariners must be knowledgeable about safety-related duties, including navigation systems. In 2006, the IMO initiated its e-navigation initiative to address these challenges.
