Can Software Code Be Patented? The actual code of your software is not patentable. While a patent does not protect the actual code created for your software, copyright protection can. Unlike patents, copyright protection attaches as soon as you put the code into a tangible medium.
The text must be written in a non-script type font (e.g., Arial, Times Roman, or Courier, preferably a font size of 12) lettering style having capital letters which should be at least 0.3175 cm (0.125 inches) high, but not smaller than 0.21 cm (0.08 inch) high (e.g., a font size of 6).
Each item on the front page of a patent is preceded by a number. These numbers are called INID codes after internationally agreed numbers for the identification of bibliographic data and are usually shown in parentheses, brackets or circles.
The letters P and U denote the type of industrial property right: P = patent for invention, U = utility model. The first two digits indicate the last two numbers of the year of filing of the application. The digit in parentheses is used for computer control.
A indicates patent application, 1 indicates initial publication of applications while B indicates granted patent, 2 indicates this granted patent having a previously published pre-grant publication. Commonly used kind codes: A. Patent Application.
Patent Numbers All patent documents are numbered. They will all have an original application number and then a publication number. The publication number will be suffixed by a letter indicating where the document is in the patent process.
