The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing. The writer should explain the relationship between himself/herself and the candidate as well as why the letter is being written.
Font: Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points so its easy to read. Adjusting the font size is a good way to keep your letter to a single page.
How to Write (Format) A recommendation letter should fill an entire page (usually 400 500 words) and contain an introduction, two (2) body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student should be described in a way that highlights both their academic skills and personal qualities.
Font sizes of between 10 and 12 and standard publishing fonts such as Times New Roman and Century are preferred. The convention is to single-space your type, skip lines between each paragraph, and either consistently choose no indentation for paragraphs or indent each paragraph one-half inch.
Colleges and businesses may not discriminate, but an innocent comment in a letter of recommendation that alludes to someones race, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion might trigger unconscious bias affecting a reviewers opinion.
What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation Salutation of one line. One paragraph detailing how you know the person and why you are qualified. One paragraph explaining why you recommend the person and details on what theyve done or accomplished. One summary reinforcing that you highly recommend the person.
Roman or Cambria. All papers should also be written with 12-point font. (Note: Times New Roman and Cambria are the default fonts for Microsoft Word, and 12-point font is also the default setting for font size).
