Mice are a symbol of false hope, mostly for Lennie. Theyre bound to be important (theyre in the title, after all), and there are several mice images throughout the novel that support their importance. The first is of a dead mouse that Lennie keeps in his pocket to pet. Its a comfort thing.
She refuses to leave and begins asking him why hes so obsessed with rabbits. He tells her its because theyre so soft. She tells him that her hair is soft and that he can feel it if he wants.
After years of working on a ranch and only looking out for himself, Carlson has become mean. Hes a bitter, coarse, ugly man who only thinks about himself and apparently cant even understand why Candy would hem and haw about shooting the only friend hes ever had. Of course, that doesnt mean hes wrong.
Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does a bad thing, George will not let him tend the rabbits.
Then Aunt Clara disappears and is replaced in Lennies mind by a giant rabbit, who takes Aunt Claras job of scolding Lennie and tells him he cannot tend the rabbits and that George will beat Lennie with a stick.
Carlson is physically described as being powerful, big-stomachedand thick-bodied His entire description is centered around his physical appearance rather than his personality; which can easily go unnoticed.
Rabbits represent a safe and happy life for Lennie: George promises him that when they get their farm together, Lennie can have all of the rabbits he wants. More broadly, rabbits symbolize innocence and abundance in the story, in stark contrast to the characters reality.
Lennie continues to talk about his rabbits, and she asks him why he likes animals so much. Lennie replies that he likes to touch soft things with his fingers.
