How to Identify a Noun Clause? You can identify a noun clause in two steps: First, check if there is a noun and a verb. Then, analyse if it plays any of the functions of a noun (subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement and object of a preposition).
Like all relative clauses, restrictive clauses are dependent clausesthey cannot stand on their own as a sentence. They follow the noun they modify and typically begin with the relative pronouns that, who, whom, or whose.
There are four main types of clauses: independent, dependent, relative, and noun. An independent clause is a complete sentence that can stand-alone. It contains a subject, verb, and complete thought.
An adjective clause is a clause that contains a subject and verb and describes the noun in a sentence. In the given sentence, that she is the tallest girl in the class, describes the noun girl. Thus, it is an adjective clause.
A restrictive clause restricts or defines the meaning of a noun or noun phrase and provides necessary information about the noun in the sentence. It is not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas.
Here are some tips for identifying clauses: Look for a subject and a verb. A clause must contain both. Look for conjunctions such as and, but, because, and although. These often signal the beginning of a clause.
As far as the structure of an adjective clause is concerned, here is what you need to know. It begins with a relative pronoun such as who, that, which, whose, etc. and comes immediately after the noun or noun phrase it is modifying. This is, in turn, followed by a noun or a verb.
Restrictive Relative Clauses A relative clause is defining when its input is necessary to understand the noun it explains; without it, the noun does not make much sense. Examples: The woman who lives across the street watches my cat when I go on vacation. The person whom I called today was my high school teacher.
