During the 18th century, Jacksonville was a British settlement. Its original name was Cowford. Prior to colonialism, much of Jacksonville was inhabited by the Timucuan Indians.
In 1968, Jacksonville and Duval County consolidated into a single governmental unit. This allowed Jacksonville to become the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States. Signs were built calling Jacksonville the Bold New City of the South, which is how the city got its nickname.
Population grew and commerce in and out of the port expanded. Spanish place names were changed to English. Most notable was the renaming of a narrow plot of land on the river to Cowford, as a place where cows could easily ford across the river.
Bold New City of the South, City on the Move, Gateway to Florida, the First Coast, the River Citywhatever the nickname, Jacksonville is the place to be. In the early days, the sharp bend where the wide expanse of the north-flowing St.
Nicknamed the First Coast by some and Jax by others, Jacksonville is Floridas largest cityand, at 875 square miles, the largest city by area in the continental United States.
A mighty watercourse called the St. Johns is Jacksonvilles central feature, lending it the obvious nickname the River City. More than twenty percent of Jacksonville consists of water, nearly all of which is the St. Johns River and its tributaries. Because the city straddles the river, its waters divide us.
The only reason the city of Jacksonville looms so large in the rankings (its technically the largest city by land area in the continental U.S.) is that it legally merged with surrounding Duval County back in 1968, swallowing up most of its own suburbs.
Jacksonville was named in 1822 for Andrew Jackson, who was not president at the time but military governor of the Florida territory.

European Discovery and Settlement Northeast Florida was discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513. He and his Spanish crew landed about 25 miles from todays Jacksonville, and named it Pascua Florida as a reminder that his landing occurred during the Feast of Flowers.
