Candy has lost his right hand in a farm accident and is now reduced to the meanest job on the ranch – that of swamper or menial cleaner.
Candy offers his $300 savings to help buy George and Lennie's farm, if he can join them (see p. 65). Candy joins Crooks and Lennie in the harness room, Crooks's home, and briefly tries to stand up to Curley's wife (see pp. 82–5).
Candy, the old 'swamper' of the ranch, or janitor, struggles with the limitations that his body creates for him, placing his conflict in the category of man vs. nature. He worries that soon, due to his age and missing hand (because of a ranch accident), he will no longer be able to do his current job.
Answer and Explanation: When Candy lost his hand while working, he was given $250 from the boss. He also has another $50 in the bank saved from his paychecks.
In Chapter 4, Curley's wife complains bitterly about her loneliness and her unhappy marriage with Curley. She sums up her situation, admitting that she feels pathetic to want company so desperately that she is willing to talk to people like Crooks, Candy, and Lennie.
Candy starts regretting that he didn't shoot the dog himself because he worries that his dogs last minutes of his life were in fear. Curley starts fighting Lennie and Lennie doesn't fight back until George says to.
Curley's wife's obsession with herself ultimately leads to her death. She's half-afraid of Lennie, but she also wants his attention and praise. It's not a coincidence that that she ends up dying because she didn't want Lennie to mess up her hair: look, and even touch if you want—but don't get too comfortable.
During the conversation, Lennie tells Crooks about the dream of owning a farm. Crooks doesn't believe that it will ever happen. He starts to question the relationship between George and Lennie. During this conversation, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George got hurt.
What did she tell Lennie? She told Lennie that she didn't like Curley and that she had had other opportunities to go places and make something of herself, but she couldn't take advantage of them, so she married Curley as the next most likely way to get out of her hometown. 4.
How did Candy save up such a large amount of money? He received a portion of money when he lost his hand. Why does Curley punch Lennie? He thinks Lennie was laughing at him.
