Centuries before the advent of lowercase letters, manuscripts were written in majuscule or capital letters. An obvious way to emphasize the beginning of a book or section was to simply increase the size of the first or initial letter.
Its a stylistic choice. IT IS A typesetting convention in the world of printing to capitalise one, two or three words of the leading sentence of a new chapter. Small capitals are mostly used, though full-sized capitals are sometimes seen.
Whether youre referring to drop caps or to the CAPITAL LETTERS which some newspapers use for the first few words of a story, the reason is the same: to draw the eye to the beginning of the article.
A drop cap (dropped capital) is a large capital letter used as a decorative element at the beginning of a paragraph or section. The size of a drop cap is usually two or more lines. The following illustration shows your options for positioning a drop cap.
The general idea is to use special formatting (e.g. all caps, small caps, italics) to gently guide the reader to recognize where the text begins (or resumes after a break).
To make text bold in LaTeX, you can use the \textbf{} command. Heres an example: latexCopy code\documentclass{article}
