ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Squamous refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSILThis means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
Inflammation often causes a mildly abnormal Pap test. An inflamed cervix may look red, irritated, or eroded. Some of the common causes of cervical inflammation are: Bacteria (from an infection), yeast or monilia infections, or trichomonas infections. Viruses, especially herpes infections and condyloma cuminata (warts).
Class V usually meant cancer. Unfortunately, this class system led to confusion regarding what number pap smear a woman had and what that really meant. Recently, a new system for pap smear classification called the Bethesda System has been introduced.
Most abnormal Pap smear results are nothing to worry about Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as abnormal. In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but its important to follow up to make sure.
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
If your Pap test is abnormal, this means that your sample contained abnormally shaped cervical cells. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common.
Infection with HPV that has progressed may cause cervical inflammation, which is usually a later sign of cervical cancer or precancer. It can also be the result of an infection due to other factors that could include: an allergy to spermicide or condom latex.
Cervicitis is swelling or inflamed tissue of the end of the uterus (cervix). Cervicitis is the inflammation of the cervix. It is usually caused by an infection but may also be caused by chemical exposure or the presence of a foreign body.
