The best way to tell if an arrow is too stiff or too weak is to videotape the flight of the arrow. Watching the flight of your arrow, you'll be able to see if the arrow is veering to the right (too weak) to the left (too stiff). Based on the results, you can take steps to correct the flight of your arrow.
Gold Tip's spine chart recommends an arrow with a 500-spine rating, assuming the arrow carries a 100-grain point. Take that same 50-pound bow, but increase the arrow length to 30 inches, and the chart calls for a 400 spine.
Slightly stiffer arrows will perform much better. Smaller and more aerodynamic is better for consistency. However, don't forget the tip of the arrow does the killing, and this can't be taken lightly. For this reason, an ultra-sharp, tough, and easy cutting/penetrating broadhead must lead the way.
S “standard” Diameter is 6.5MM, H “Reduced Diameter” is 6MM, X “Micro Diameter” is 5MM, and our “Ultra-Micro” G Diameter is 4MM (utilizing Deep Six components.) The new nomenclature immediately allows you to relate one size to another, and makes it a lot easier to select the right components for your preferred arrow.
Diameters for carbon are most commonly 5/16", but many options are now available in larger and smaller diameters. The smaller diameters are rapidly growing in popularity as they have less wind drag and deeper penetration compared to arrows of the same weight.
The greater the surface area of an arrow, the quicker it slows down. Because skinny arrows maintain more of their speed, they also have more kinetic energy and better penetration at longer distances. At 60 yards, small-diameter arrows lose a lower percentage of their initial velocity than a larger-diameter arrow.
The numbers refer to the spine of the arrow. The different spines refer to the stiffness, a 400 spine arrow is generally for bows 40-60 lbs. 350 spine is for bows roughly 55 - 75 lbs, and a 500 spine arrow is for bows roughly 30 - 50 lbs.
The most common spine sizes range from 260 to 500. As with combination arrows, a smaller number means the arrow has a stiffer spine. Therefore, a value of 340 indicates a stiffer and heavier spine while a value of 500 indicates the lightest and most flexible spine.
Shooting an arrow that is not stiff enough, or a group of arrows that vary in stiffness, will cause you to be less accurate. An under-spined arrow will veer right, while an arrow that is too stiff will favor slightly left.
The spine rating of an arrow is simply a measurement of its stiffness. The same arrow comes in a variety of stiffness: the lower the number, the stiffer the arrow. For example, a 300 arrow is stiffer than an arrow spine of 500.
