ZCTAs are generalized area representations of the United States Postal Service (USPS) ZIP code service areas, but are not the same as ZIP codes.
However, you can access geographic information, such as the state, county, tract number, block number, and block group number, about a particular address using the Census Geocoder. The Geocoder can be accessed at .
Census blocks, the smallest geographic area for which the Bureau of the Census collects and tabulates decennial census data, are formed by streets, roads, railroads, streams and other bodies of water, other visible physical and cultural features, and the legal boundaries shown on Census Bureau maps.
A census block is placed in the ZCTA that corresponds to the majority of zip codes assigned to addresses in that block. As a result, a ZCTA may not include all houses that receive mail in that zip code, but it is the best equivalent available.
Census tracts are polygons and cover a well-defined geographic area. ZIP codes are clusters of lines; the U.S. Postal Service does not define ZIP Code boundaries. A very large number of 5-digit ZIP Codes are P.O. boxes or specific street addresses and thus represent points not even one line.
The five digits actually have specific functions: the first number in the code represents a general geographic area of the nation, 0 in the East, moving to 9 in the West. The next two numbers represent regional areas, and the final two identify specific Post Offices.
There are two types of zip code, one is 5-digit zip code: 00601, 00602, 00603, 00604, 00605, 00606 etc. Another is 9-digit zip code: 00601-0001, 00601-0017,00601-0021,00601-0221 etc. Therefore, United States zip code consists of five digits or nine digits.
Every Census Block Group has a unique 12-digit FIPS code. The Block Groups unique identifier is the 12th digit of the FIPS Code. This number determines the first digit of all the census blocks contained within a block group. For instance, census Block Group 2 includes any block numbered 2000 to 2999.
