A typography tail is the decorative curved descender of a capital Q, R and K. The descenders of the lower case g, j, p, q, and y are also sometimes called tails.
These little tails are called serifs. The serifs make it easier for our eyes to flow through horizontal reading quickly, such as how we do while reading a book. Serif is heavily used for the body of the text.
Verdana is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft Corporation, with hand-hinting done by Thomas Rickner, then at Monotype. Demand for such a typeface was recognized by Virginia Howlett of Microsofts typography group and commissioned by Steve Ballmer.
