HPV primary screening is a way of testing the sample of cells taken during cervical screening. A lab tests your sample for a virus called high-risk HPV. High-risk HPV can cause cervical cell changes to develop into cervical cancer over time. If you have high-risk HPV, that same sample will be tested for cell changes.
There are at least 12 high-risk strains of HPV, but only twotypes 16 and 18cause the majority of HPV-related cancers, including those involving the cervix, vagina, vulva, , and anus. High-risk HPV strains can also lead to cancers of the throat, tongue, and tonsils, known as oropharyngeal cancer.
Types of screening Conventional PapIn a conventional Pap smear, samples are smeared directly onto a microscope slide after collection. Liquid-based cytologyThe sample of (epithelial) cells is taken from the transitional zone, the squamocolumnar junction of the cervix, between the ectocervix and the endocervix.
Human papillomavirus, also called HPV, that is spread through sexual activity can cause genital warts, changes in cervical cells or cancers. The HPV test looks for evidence of the virus in samples from the body. This test may be done at the same time or after another screening test called a Pap test or Pap smear. The E6/E7 oncogenes are well known to play an important role in the development of cervical cancer. Because E6/E7 overexpression occurs after HPV integration into the genome, direct detection of HR-HPV E6/E7 in cervical samples may be more specific in detecting high-grade cervical lesions than HR-HPV-DNA testing [12].
If you test positive for HPV and your Pap test is normal, your doctor will most likely recommend repeating the Pap and HPV screening exams in one year. If your second HPV test comes back negative, continue regular Pap and HPV tests. If your second HPV test comes back positive, your doctor may recommend a colposcopy.
The Western blot test separates the blood proteins and detects the specific proteins (called HIV antibodies) that indicate an HIV infection. The Western blot is used to confirm a positive ELISA, and the combined tests are 99.9% accurate.
