hello my name is jeff schalleberger and iamp;#39;m going to talk to you a little bit about a technique called x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or xps uh we offer this here in the materials characterization lab at penn state uh you may have also heard the term esca used thatamp;#39;s exactly the same technique it stands for electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis xps is by far the more commonly used terms thatamp;#39;s what iamp;#39;ll use throughout my presentation here xps is based on the photoelectric effect the photoelectric effect is we shine light onto a solid sample and we uh that light in our case in the form of low energy x-rays ejects electrons that were originally bound to the atoms in the material and we knock those electrons off into the vacuum and ultimately measure these with a spectrometer the equation that describes the photoelectric effect is shown here very simple equation this is actually what albert einstein won his nobel prize for in 1921 for some work he d

For the latter ones, they are called system peaks or ghost peaks since they are not real sample peaks. Because light scattering intensity is highly sensitive to large-sized particles, even very small amounts of those large particles will result in a peak.
A ghost peak is a peak that appears at a position where we do not expect a peak. It is a component that shows up in the system and it may show up everywhere in the chromatogram. Sometimes it is a sharp peak, sometimes its a broad peak or a hump and sometimes it is a rising baseline.
Various types of ghost peaks are widely observed in the separation process of HPLC, which can be basically attributed to the improper selection of mobile phase [1] and diluents, impurities in the reagents, additives [2], containers, consumables [3] or instruments, or the reaction between samples and injection vials [
Ghost peaks in chromatography are unwanted peaks that appear at an interval less than the expected retention time. These peaks are generally caused by interactions of other compounds or metabolites with the solvent and stationary phase, which leads to a decrease in separation.
Quantitative XPS is the process of comparing two or more intensities in XPS spectra to determine the amount of mate- rial at the surface of a sample. These intensities may be from the same peak or different peaks in the same spectrum or the same set of peaks in different spectra.
Ghost peaks are of unknown origin in a chromatogram, are easily misidentified when they are close to peaks of interest, and can result in quantitative errors when they overlap peaks of interest. Uncertainty in data quality and reliability is of course the result.
