A JPEG file will give you at LEAST one full F-stop above and below proper exposure for correction purposes. For our use as outdoor photographers whose work appears in magazines, JPEG is actually more forgiving than the slide film we shot for years, which has essentially zero latitude.
Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
A RAW file is the uncompressed and unprocessed image data captured by a digital camera or scanners sensors. Shooting in RAW captures a high level of image detail, with large file sizes and lossless quality. However, if you shoot both RAW and JPEG, your camera will produce JPEGs with the effects added, as well as RAWs without the effects. So if you want to see the effects while maintaining the integrity of the RAW file, then capturing both can be beneficial.
How to shoot in RAW. Taking a RAW image is actually pretty easy. Access your cameras file settings, often in the menu and also sometimes inside a shortcut marked Quality or Qual. Many sports and news photographers shoot both RAW and JPEG; dual card slots facilitates this even more easily. The JPEGs get sent to the media outlets, but the RAW is always there if needed.
Shooting in RAW format gives photographers greater control over exposure settings, enhanced white balance adjustments, the ability to retain more details in shadows and highlights, and non-destructive editing.
