A peripheral blood smear tells how many red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are in your blood. Polychromasia shows up when your red blood cells appear blue or gray when treated with the dye. This indicates they have more of a substance called ribonucleic acid (RNA) than normal red blood cells.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Pap being a differential staining technique imparts red to pink color to the keratinized mature cells and blue to green color to the immature or intermediate cells that are metabolically active.
Blue blobs appear in atrophic smear in postmenopausal women due to the lack of mucus and stagnation of exfoliated cells, which are then further degenerated. Disintegration of chromatin results in the characteristic dense cyanophilic appearance of blue blobs and they eventually become granular background material.
Increased vaginal discharge, which may be pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling. Abnormal vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods, after sex, douching or a pelvic exam. Longer or heavier menstrual periods. Bleeding after menopause.
Blue blobs: Dark blue, rounded, amorphous masses in pap smears are known as blue blobs, (arrow) thought to represent either condensed mucus or degenerated bare nuclei.
After the procedure, patients may have some minor cramping. We recommend taking over-the-counter ibuprofen for this as needed. Patients may also take over-the-counter pain meds an hour before the procedure. As mentioned previously, a couple of days of light bloody/brownish/blackish/grainy discharge is normal.
PAP bluing solution is a variant of Scotts solution and is used specifically in Papanicolaou staining (Pap staining) for cytological smears. It is used to bluish the hematoxylin in the stained nuclei to improve contrast and visibility, which facilitates the interpretation and analysis of cytology specimens.
