hi and welcome to this presentation on sample handling preparation and mounting for xps and other surface analysis methods and i want to first thank the organizers for inviting me to talk at this workshop this talk is based primarily on two references which are part of a collection internal vacuum science and technology and this particular set is referenced as you can see with this notation here and the idea is to help educate people with regard to various aspects of xps and prevent problems with bad information thatamp;#39;s gotten out of literature the first paper is a sample preparation and mounting technique paper and the other authors are roberto garcia of nc state jeff schallenberger from the penn state university john newman from physical electronics and kerry donnelly from university of north carolina the other paper was put together by carrie donnelly and i and is an introduction to xps why are we doing this talk well surface analysis requires surfaces that have not been comp

How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus. Initial state effects describe any effect that results from the electronic structure of an atom/ion undergoing photoelectron emission that was present prior to the photoelectron emission process. These effects are split into two subgroups: Spin-induced interactions present within the photoelectron emitting atom/ion. Initial and Final State Effects - The XPS Library xpslibrary.com initial-final-states xpslibrary.com initial-final-states
The instrument allows you to plot the spectrum using binding energy instead of kinetic energy on the axis; then the photoelectron peaks will be at the same binding energies but the Auger peaks will appear at different places in this plot since the plot is with binding energy and not kinetic energy. Why Auger peaks in XPS spectrum represent Kinetic energy of Auger ResearchGate post Why-Auger-peaks- ResearchGate post Why-Auger-peaks-
XPS requires high vacuum (residual gas pressure p ~ 106 Pa) or ultra-high vacuum (p 107 Pa) conditions, although a current area of development is ambient-pressure XPS, in which samples are analyzed at pressures of a few tens of millibar.
Charging Effects in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy When X-ray photons strike a surface, they cause the emission of electrons. This, of course, is the basis of the XPS technique. If the surface is electrically insulating, then the emission of electrons causes a positive charge to accumulate at the surface.
The Oxidation state of any element/ ion from XPS by matching the binding energy positions of observed spectrum to reported literature. How can we calculate the oxidation state from XPS graph? ResearchGate post How-can-we-calcul ResearchGate post How-can-we-calcul
Final State Effects: To minimise the increased energy, electrons in the ionised species undergo reorganisation resulting in a number of possible final states, each with their own corresponding energy and therefore extra peaks appear in the photoelectron spectrum.
