Blue blobs appear in atrophic smear in postmenopausal women due to the lack of mucus and stagnation of exfoliated cells, which are then further degenerated. Disintegration of chromatin results in the characteristic dense cyanophilic appearance of blue blobs and they eventually become granular background material.
A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix.
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer. This category is divided into several groups for squamous cells and glandular cells.
The superficial squamous cell comprises the outermost layer of the non-keratinizing epithelium. The polygonal-shaped intermediate squamous cell size ranges 1,256-1,618 m. Parabasal squamous cells are found in the basal layer of the squamous epithelium. The tall, columnar-shaped endocervical cell is 188 m in size.
Navicular cell is a boat-shaped benign epithelial cell seen in Pap smear. They are seen in pregnancy (most prominently during smears taken in the second trimester), second half of menstrual cycle, during menopause and in women using medroxyprogesterone acetate (depo-provera) for contraception.
Boat-shaped cells have the appearance of a canoe viewed from above with sharpened ends. They lack central pallor, and stain deeply. Typically 10-15 um in length with width narrower than normal cells. Conditions associated with the shape abnormality. Sickle cell disease, for example HbSS, HbSC.
