Closed cell foam is a vapor barrier. Open cell foam is a vapor retarder, but its moisture permeability properties in our climate are sufficient for most structures. Our building science professionals can advise you as to which type of foam is best for your project.
Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is a foam plastic board with fine, closed cells containing a mixture of air and non-ozone depleting refrigerant gases. If joints are sealed properly, it can perform as an air barrier and, at certain thicknesses, may perform as a vapour barrier.
At one inch, XPS is vapor-semi-permeable meaning, it is vapor diffuse open, or permeable. At 1-1/2 inch and great thickness, however, XPS becomes vapor-retarding (i.e. a vapor barrier1).
XPS and EPS insulations both absorb some moisture from exposure to water for extended periods of time; however, researchfrom the 1970s to the present dayhas consistently shown that XPS absorbs docHubly less moisture than EPS with the differences becoming most apparent after about six years.
Rmax R-SEAL Construction Tape The 3 mil acrylic-based tape is pressure sensitive for maximum adhesion. Additional reasons that Rmax R-SEAL is the best tape for foam board insulation include UV-resistance and weather-tight seal.
Rigid Foam as an Insulation Strategy The boards are available in several thicknesses and R-values; 1-inch and 2-inch thicknesses are common. Rigid insulation provides thermal protection and it can also serve as an air and moisture barrier.
However, XPS is considered a vapor retarder, not a vapor barrier. Although higher densities of EPS have a greater compressive strength than lower densities, EPS is never as strong as XPS and is more susceptible to crumbling at the edges and to other jobsite damage, which is why EPS is rarely used for wall sheathing.
RESIDENTIAL XPS PRODUCTS With its R-value of 5 per inch of thickness, FOAMULAR helps you chase away the chill for a home that is cozy and comfortable.
