In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation.
Block quotations are only used if the text is longer than 40 words (APA) or four lines (MLA).
What is a block quotation example? An example of a block quote includes any passage you cite that is more than 40 words. The block quote consists of a lead-in line, and it is set off with a 1/2 inch indent for the entire passage. You also need to include a citation, either at the beginning or end of the passage.
What to Know Highlight the text youd like to use as a block quote. Select Increase Indent from the menu bar or use the Ctrl + ] keyboard shortcut. Open Format from the menu bar, then Line Paragraph Spacing. Change as desired.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
Instructions for creating hanging indents in Word, Google Docs, and Pages. Select your citation(s). Right-clickthe selected citation and click Paragraph in the pop-up menu. In the Indentation section, open the Special drop-down menu and select Hanging. Click OK to exit the pop-up menu and implement your changes.
About Block Quotes Any quotation containing 40 or more words should be formatted as a Block Quote. Do not use quotation marks to enclose block quotations. Place period at the end of the quote rather than after the citation. Block quotes should start on a new line and indent the block about inch from the left margin.
MLA and APA Directions In MLA format, a quotation of more than four full lines of prose or three lines of verse should be indented inch from the left margin and double-spaced like the rest of the paper. In APA format, a quotation of more than forty words should also be indented half an inch from the left margin.
