foreign Dr Diane Lyme disease expert here and weamp;#39;re going to talk about the Western blot test now before we jump down that test and talk about some of the problems with the test I want to talk about a precursor task to that so most classically in conventional medicine people do start with the task called the Elisa test the standard of care is to run the Elisa people only move past the Elisa to the secondary test called the Western blot if the Elisa is positive now the problem with this is the one study showed that there was a 66 percent chance of a false negative from the Elisa test so many people have done this first round of testing they donamp;#39;t even make it to the second round of testing because they have a negative test and they actually do have Lyme disease so thatamp;#39;s really important to understand secondly the Western blot is a test where whatamp;#39;s essentially whatamp;#39;s happening is your blood is drawn and theyamp;#39;re looking for bands bands are

To know how to analyze western blot data, Look for the sizes of the bands. These will be represented by a number, either followed by kDa or preceded by p. This is the size of the protein which has been detected and is the scale on which the proteins are separated in a Western blot.
The western blot method is prescribed as the official Japanese confirmation test for egg proteins (see Table 17.3). These western blot kits use specific polyclonal antibodies against ovalbumin and ovomucoid. Their detection limit was determined to be 0.5 g/g of the allergenic ingredient per g of soluble protein.
However, the main difference that has to be noted is the molecule that each technique is meant to identify. Southern blot detects specific DNA sequences, Northern blot detects particular RNA sequences, and Western blot detects specific proteins. All these techniques are complementary.
The western blot is extensively used in biochemistry for the qualitative detection of single proteins and protein-modifications (such as post-translational modifications). At least 89% of all protein-related publications are estimated to apply western blots.
Southern blot detects specific DNA sequences, Northern blot detects particular RNA sequences, and Western blot detects specific proteins. All these techniques are complementary. Furthermore, it is worth saying that, even though the methods used are very similar, the processes all differ a bit from the others.

Major types of blotting techniques include Southern blotting (for DNA), Northern blotting (for RNA), Western blotting (for proteins), Southwestern blotting (for DNA-protein interactions), and Eastern blotting (for post-translational modifications of proteins).
Three main types of blots are used regularly in laboratories. Western blot for proteins, Northern blot for RNA, and though not very common, Southern blot for DNA. There can be slight variations to these blots, each for a specific experimental purpose.
