Why is PAP smear by Liquid based cytology (LBC) Test Done. LBC Test is done for detection of cervical cancer and early cancerous changes in the cervix. It also additionally detects any infections of cervix. The test is usually done between 25 to 65 years every three or five years as per the doctors recommendation.
A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is an exam a doctor uses to find out if you have cervical cancer. The test can also see changes in your cervical cells that may turn into cancer later. It is named after Georgios Papanikolaou, the Greek doctor who invented it.
In addition, a Pap may check for certain sexually transmitted infections, such as, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Trichomonas. Some Pap tests also evaluate for infections such as Yeast and Bacterial Vaginosis.
The Papanicolaou stain is undoubtedly the most commonly used in cytology. It has three cytoplasmic dyes, orange G, eosin Y, and light blue. It can stain cells blue or blue-green (basophilia, cyanophilia), pink (acidophilia, eosinophilia), orange (orangeophilia), or indeterminate (gray-blue).
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
A Pap test is mainly used to: screen for and help diagnose precancerous conditions of the cervix and cervical cancer. help diagnose precancerous conditions of the vagina and vaginal cancer. diagnose infection and inflammation in the lower female reproductive tract.
What can a Pap smear detect? Cervical cancer. Potentially precancerous cells in the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia). Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that increases the risk of cervical cancer.
