By default, the escape character is a (double quote) for CSV-formatted files. If you want to use a different escape character, use the ESCAPE clause of COPY , CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE or the hawq load control file to declare a different escape character.
Each line should contain the same number of fields. Fields that contain a special character (comma, CR, LF, or double quote), must be escaped by enclosing them in double quotes (Hex 22). An optional header line may appear as the first line of the file with the same format as normal record lines.
If a value in the CSV file contains a double quote, the whole value must be wrapped in double quotes , and a double quote must be prepended to each double quote in the value. Note: Excel does this automatically when saving as CSV.
CSV , or Comma-separated Values, is an extremely common flat-file format that uses commas as a delimiter between values. Anyone familiar with spreadsheet programs has very likely encountered CSV files before - theyre easily consumed by Google Spreadsheet, Microsoft Excel, and countless other applications.
For read. csv(), the default quote parameter is quote=\, which means that only double quotes will be used to delimit strings, not single quotes.
Use single-quotes for string literals, e.g. my-identifier , but use double-quotes for strings that are likely to contain single-quote characters as part of the string itself (such as error messages, or any strings containing natural language), e.g. Youve got an error! .
csv(), the default quote parameter is quote=\, which means that only double quotes will be used to delimit strings, not single quotes. Because two of your sample names had apostrophes (single quotes), the read. table() function tried to include everything between those two as a single string.
The double quotes are always used in CSV when the text value has, or potentially has, a comma or other character that could break the format.
