In most cases, brown blood during your period is normal. The color and consistency of blood can change throughout your menstrual cycle. It may be thin and watery one day, and thick and clumpy the next. It may be bright red or brown, heavy or light.
Much like brown period blood, this is simply old blood that was chilling in your body for too long. If your period blood is black, it can also sometimes have the consistency of coffee grounds, which is simply your menses reacting to being exposed to an acidic environment.
This can happen at the beginning or end of a period or could be related to a blockage. Very dark, heavy bleeding that looks gritty or has a lot of clumps could be a sign of a miscarriage or another condition (3).
Menstruation, or period, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a womans monthly cycle. Every month, your body prepares for pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the uterus, or womb, sheds its lining. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus.
My periods are normally heavy, but do these clumps mean that something is wrong? Its perfectly normal to notice some clumps from time to time during your period. These are blood clots that may contain tissue. As the uterus sheds its lining, this tissue leaves the body as a natural part of the menstrual cycle.
Blood clots are a natural part of the bodys defense mechanism. The thick, jelly-like texture of a menstrual clot helps prevent too much blood from escaping. The same clotting function happens elsewhere in the body in response to an injury to the tissue, such as a cut or laceration.
Endometriosis blood clots may appear as dark or bright red clumps or blobs in menstrual flow. The clots can vary in size and texture, ranging from small and grainy to larger and more jelly-like in consistency.
As well as causing menstrual bleeding, research suggests that changes in progesterone and estrogen levels cause the body to retain more water and salt. The bodys cells become swollen with water, causing the feeling of bloating.
