Weight gain is a common symptom of PMS (premenstrual syndrome), occurring in the week or two before menstruation. Up to a few pounds may be gained during this time, but this extra weight is shed as soon as menstrual bleeding begins. This symptom is experienced by most menstruating women, whether or not troubled by PMS.
Although a persons first few periods are often light bringing a few spots of red-brown blood throughout the week you may have a heavier flow. Your monthly period will follow a more consistent pattern once your hormones stabilize.
Most menstrual blood clots are normal. At the beginning and the end of your cycle, they may appear bright red. Because your flow is moving quickly, the blood doesnt have time to darken. You may also see dark red or maroon clots during the first few days of your period when your flow is the heaviest.
If it is not your month to become a parent (the egg is not fertilized), a drop in another hormone (progesterone) signals the lining to start sloughing off. This tissue can give period flow a slimy consistency that is totally normal. Menstrual blood is generally thicker than water and ordinary blood.
Bloating during ovulation may typically happen around days 11 to 14 of your regular menstrual cycle. The cause of ovulation bloating is the increase in the levels of hormones at the time of ovulation, which results in water retention. The bloating may get better within a couple of days.
Bloating may occasionally add a pound or two, but it doesnt actually signify weight gain. A simple way to tell the difference between bloating and weight gain or fat is how your stomach looks and feels. If your stomach is tight and hard, then bloating is the cause. If your stomach is soft and thick, then thats fat.
Bloating is considered a very common symptom of PMS. Symptoms of PMS can begin a week or two before your period starts. You may bloat every month, once in a while, or not at all. Relief from bloating may occur immediately after you start your period or a few days into it.
Period bloating is one of several premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms that can occur 1-2 weeks before a womans period. It may be accompanied by stomach cramp, backaches and other symptoms. Women feel their abdomen is heavy and swollen just before and at the start of her period.
