Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced by the liver and yolk sac of a fetus. AFP has no normal function in adults. The alpha fetoprotein test (AFP) is a blood test performed to measure, diagnose, or monitor fetal distress or fetal abnormalities. It can also detect some liver disorders and some cancers in adults.
What is it used for? An AFP blood test is used during pregnancy to check the babys risk of birth defects and genetic disorders, such as neural tube defects or Down syndrome. The test does not diagnose any health conditions.
The study by Harada T, et al. [39] showed that approximately 40% of all cirrhotic patients will have AFP levels higher than 20 ng/ml. An increase in AFP levels (between 10 and 500 ng/ml, and sometimes up to 1000 ng/ml) can be seen in adult patients with hepatitis or cirrhosis with any etiology.
The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test is a blood test for pregnant people. Healthcare providers use the AFP test to check a fetuss risks of birth defects or genetic conditions. The AFP test measures alpha-fetoprotein levels.
The AFP PLUS Quad Test will allow us to identify at least five out of every six cases of open spina bifida and almost all cases of anencephaly. It can also lead to the diagnosis of about eight out of every 10 cases of Down syndrome and trisomy 18.
High levels of AFP may be a sign of cancer of the liver, ovaries, or testicles. But having a high AFP level doesnt mean you have cancer or that you will get cancer. Liver injury and liver diseases that arent cancer can also cause high AFP levels.
AFP is a protein that is present in patients with liver disease. AFP is also a tumor marker and may be used to see if a patient has liver cancer. (Liver cancer is also called hepatocellular carcinoma).
Using 20 ng/ml as a cutoff, AFP showed a 63% sensitivity and 88.7% specificity. Combined use of US and AFP showed 97% sensitivity and 82.3% specificity. ROC curve results for AFP levels demonstrated that using 5.6 ng/ml as a cutoff, AFP will have a 77% sensitivity and 78% specificity for HCC detection.
