President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Lt. Gen. Philemon Santos Jr. as the new chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Santos, a respected intelligence officer, currently heads the AFP Eastern Mindanao command and will succeed Gen. Noel Clement, who is set to retire on January 5. Santos is known for his leadership in battling communist rebels in different regions. He is from the Philippine Military Academy Sandiwaan Class of 1986, alongside notable alumni such as former police chiefs Bato Dela Rosa, Oscar Albayalde, and PNP Officer-in-Charge Archy Gamboa.
