A paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and are all related to a single topic. Almost every piece of writing you do that is longer than a few sentences should be organized into paragraphs.
Various educators teach rules governing the length of paragraphs. They may say that a paragraph should be 100 to 200 words long, or be no more than five or six sentences.
A good example of a paragraph contains a topic sentence, details and a conclusion. There are many different kinds of animals that live in China. Tigers and leopards are animals that live in Chinas forests in the north. In the jungles, monkeys swing in the trees and elephants walk through the brush.
Step 1: Identify the paragraphs purpose. First, you need to know the central idea that will organize this paragraph. Step 2: Show why the paragraph is relevant. Step 3: Give evidence. Step 4: Explain or interpret the evidence. Step 5: Conclude the paragraph. Step 6: Read through the whole paragraph.
A paragraph does not need five sentences. It can have one or more sentences depending on the medium, topic, audience, and purpose of the text. There are no distinct guidelines on how long a paragraph should be. However, five is usually the maximum number of sentences that make up a good paragraph.
Each paragraph in the body of the paper should include a topic sentence, supporting details to support the topic sentence, and a concluding sentence. The paragraphs purpose and scope will determine its length, but most paragraphs contain at least two complete sentences.
