Open a Google Doc. In the top left, click Insert Page number. More options. Under Apply to, choose where you want to apply the page number change. Tip: If you dont find this option, add a section break. Learn how to add a section break. Click Apply.
To use different page numbers or formats in different sections, create Page breaks and set page number for each. The following shows an intro with lower case Roman numerals. You can use any other format instead. Select between the intro and the body of the document and go to Layout Breaks Next Page.

Modifying page numbers with section breaks Place your cursor on the page where you want the first section to end. Go to the Page Layout tab, then click the Breaks command. Choose Next Page from the menu. A section break will be added, creating a new section on the next page.
Double-click the header or the footer area (near the top or bottom of the page). Go to Header Footer Field. In the Field names list, select Page, and then select OK. Go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers, select the format you want, and then select OK.
On the Insert tab, within the Header Footer Group, click Page Number and then navigate to Format Page Numbers. On the Format Page Numbers dialog box, select Roman numerals from the Number Format drop-down list. Word replaces the integer numbers with Roman numerals as pages i, ii and iii.
What to Know To reset page numbers: Insert Page Number Remove Page Numbers. Do this for each section. To adjust page numbering: Insert Page Number Format Page Numbers. Make sure Start at is set to 1. To make page numbers continuous: Format Page Numbers and choose Continue from previous section.
To start page number with page 1, do the following: With the header open, select page 3 on page 3. Click Page Number in the Header Footer group. Select Format Page Numbers. In the Page Numbering section of the resulting dialog, select the Start At option and enter 1, as shown in Figure G. Click OK.
