In the New Testament, ordinance renders different Greek words, namely, (1) dikaioma, in Luke 1:6 and Hebrews 9:1,10. The word means literally, anything declared right; but in these passages ceremonial and religious regulation; (2) dogma, in Ephesians 2:15; Colossians 2:14.
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to Christs cross. The death of Christ isnt the end to the story, the end is that all of our sins are nailed.
In fact, the phrasing Paul chose to use in Colossians 2:14 showed that the law of God continues to carry great force. By saying the penalty demanded under the law of God was nailed to the instrument that killed Christ, Paul was showing that the law of God was still in force, still requiring death for sin.
The word ordinances in Colossians 2:14 and Ephesians 2:15 does not refer to Gods laws. It is translated from the Greek word dogma and refers generally to opinions, judgments, and decrees. Such ordinances could be public decrees by government officials or religious decrees by religious officials.
The word ordinance has two meanings in the scriptures. Sometimes it refers to the laws and commandments of God. Other times it refers to the rites and ceremonies by which we formalize sacred covenants with God. What can we do to better understand the ordinances and the blessings that flow from them?
Communion and baptism are the only two specific ordinances or orders Jesus gave the church to follow. Both have to do with identifying with Jesus Christ and identifying with the church the body of Christ.
The note of guilt is the record of our sins. People sin by obeying the traditions and customs of men which causes them to break the commandments of God (Matthew 15:1-3; Mark 7:7-9). This handwriting of ordinances this note of sinful guilt was nailed by Christ to the stake or cross.
[3]To blot out sins, is to forgive them. Sins are compared to debts, which are recorded in Gods book of remembrance, and when paid, are crossed or cancelled.
