The Gutenberg Bible is printed in the blackletter type styles that would become known as Textualis (Textura) and Schwabacher. The name Textura refers to the texture of the printed page: straight vertical strokes combined with horizontal lines, giving the impression of a woven structure.
Milo, the official University of Arizona typeface.
Gutenbergs newly devised hand mould made possible the precise and rapid creation of metal movable type in large quantities. His two inventions, the hand mould and the movable-type printing press, together drastically reduced the cost of printing books and other documents in Europe, particularly for shorter print runs.
The first typeface was a Blackletter variety used by Johannes Gutenberg on the first printing press, starting in 1440. This typeface design was created to mimic the calligraphic handwriting used by monks to hand-transcribe manuscripts prior to the invention of the printing press.
The type was cast in a lead-tin alloy of Gutenbergs concoction (now called type metal) which, because of an admixture of antimony, had the property of expanding slightly upon setting. It thus exactly reproduced the form of the letter indented in the matrix.
Trajan Pro Regular is used for the University Wordmark and can be used for headlines.
The University of Illinois default web fonts Montserrat, Source Sans Pro and Georgia provide consistent type styles across print and digital mediums. Use Source Sans as the primary font in electronic communications whenever possible. The font files may be hosted only on websites with *. illinois.edu domains.
Johannes based letterforms on the liturgical scripts of the era Textura Quadrata, a form of Blackletter.
