If no sortspec is given, the default is ASC order and NULLS LAST. If only the sort order is specified, then NULLS LAST is used if the order is ASC, otherwise NULLS FIRST. If the sort order is not specified, ASC is used.
ASC | DESC Specifies that the values in the specified column should be sorted in ascending or descending order. ASC sorts from the lowest value to highest value. DESC sorts from highest value to lowest value. ASC is the default sort order.
In general terms, Ascending means smallest to largest, 0 to 9, and/or A to Z and Descending means largest to smallest, 9 to 0, and/or Z to A.
The NULLS FIRST and NULLS LAST options can be used to determine whether nulls appear before or after non-null values in the sort ordering. By default, null values sort as if larger than any non-null value; that is, NULLS FIRST is the default for DESC order, and NULLS LAST otherwise.
Ascending order (ASC) sorts records from lowest to highest in case of numbers and from A to Z in case of text strings. Descending order (DESC) sorts records from highest to lowest in case of numbers and from Z to A in case of text strings.
The NULLS LAST keywords instruct the database server to put NULL values last in the sorted query results. In a descending sort, the DESC NULLS LAST keywords request the default order.
As a result, the ordering for NULLS depends on the sort order: If the sort order is ASC , NULLS are returned last; to force NULLS to be first, use NULLS FIRST . If the sort order is DESC , NULLS are returned first; to force NULLS to be last, use NULLS LAST .
Other forms: nulls. Null means having no value; in other words null is zero, like if you put so little sugar in your coffee that its practically null. Null also means invalid, or having no binding force. From the Latin nullus, meaning not any, poor, powerless null is not actually there at all.
