In chapter 3 of Of Mice and Men, George makes Lennie return a puppy he was hiding in his coat. Candy reluctantly allows Carlson to kill his dog because the dog smells. George, Lennie, and Candy discuss buying a farm together. Curley and Slim are angry with each other because Curley thinks Slim has been with his wife.
He has killed several mice. George thought that a puppy would be large enough to be safe from Lennies strength, but Lennie killed his puppy when the puppy tried to play-bite him. The death is foreshadowed by Lennies previous run-in with a young woman whom he had tried to pet.
At the end of chapter 3, the author foreshadows that bad things are to come by thoughts from Ponyboy. To illustrate, Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldnt get worse. I was wrong. Ponyboy thinks that everything will be alright but he said that he was wrong, so things will get even worse.
The crushing of Curleys hand When he enters the ranch-hand bunkhouse, Curley immediately intimidates and sizes Lennie up. Curley wears a glove to keep his hand soft, foreshadowing how his hand will not remain intact around Lennie, who has a history of accidentally crushing soft things (like the dead mice).
In chapter 6, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away. The other men intend to torture him before they kill him, so George takes Curleys gun and heads off to find him. Fortunately, he finds Lennie before the rest of the men and has a few moments with him to bring him joy before he kills him out of mercy.
Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. (Chapter 3) We also learn that the pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. These and other examples of privileges foreshadow their eventual abuse of power; the pigs will always find ways to get benefits without working.
The water snake in Of Mice and Men is a symbol Steinbeck used to represent Lennie and the way a simple man is swallowed by the world. In the beginning, it is a sign of life and tranquility. In the end, however, the innocently-swimming water snake is plucked from the water and eaten by a heron.
The death of Lennie is foreshadowed in Of Mice and Men chapter three. This is first foreshadowed when Carlson shoots Candys dog to put it out of its misery. Later, the events that lead to Lennies death are foreshadowed when George reveals to Slim the events that made the two leave Weed, California.
