Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions look slightly abnormal when looked at under a microscope. They are usually caused by infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are found when a Pap test or biopsy is done.
The iodine stains healthy cells brown, while abnormal cells maintain their typical white or yellow color. A biopsy may be performed in which the physician removes a small amount of cervical tissue for examination by a pathologist. This is the only sure way to determine whether the abnormal cells indicate cancer. Abnormal Pap Smear | ColumbiaDoctors columbiadoctors.org treatments-conditions columbiadoctors.org treatments-conditions
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer. This category is divided into several groups for squamous cells and glandular cells.
Precancerous conditions of the cervix are changes to cervical cells that make them more likely to develop into cancer. These conditions are not yet cancer. But if they arent treated, there is a chance that these abnormal changes may become cervical cancer.
Unclear results could mean that you have some cells that dont look quite like they should, but cant be classified as abnormal. It could also mean that your sample wasnt good, possibly because you had intercourse or used a tampon prior to the test.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Sometimes the results are unclear because the lab sample doesnt contain enough cells to evaluate (insufficient cell count) or because the cells are obscured by inflammation, mucus, or blood from a heavy menstrual period.
