In this lesson, we mentioned three symbols from John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men: Candys dog, which represents the fate of those who are weak; mice, which symbolize false hope; and the dream farm, which symbolizes unattainable independence and protection from the world.
One example of alliteration in Of Mice and Men is the title itself. The repetitive m sound draws the readers attention to the title. Another example of alliteration is, Slims a jerkline skinner. The names of all the ranch hands are also alliterative: Candy, Crooks, Curley, and Carlson.
The days-old puppy symbolizes the inescapability of doom and sufferingafter narrowly surviving being drowned by Slim, it dies at Lennies hands after he accidentally smacks it too hard when it tries to playfully bite him, perhaps as it was even suckling Lennies fingers in search of milk.
Euphemisms in Literature Literature often uses euphemisms to make a story more descriptive or to illustrate a characters personality. In Of Mice and Men, George calls Lennie nuts instead of saying he has a mental disorder.
Curley represents the land-owning class in his aggressive dominance and forceful authority around the ranch. Although it is his father who actually owns the ranch, Curley asserts his power through fear, control, and isolating the workers.
Answer and Explanation: One of Lennies fixations is soft things, so keeping the mouse in his pocket means he always has something soft to touch. The dead mouse symbolizes Lennies lack of understanding of basic societal rules and acceptable behaviors. It also symbolizes Lennies lack of understanding of death.
Answer and Explanation: He is a character and there is really no wider symbolism to him other than him as a character. But he is a wonderful character because we have a great deal of sympathy and empathy for his plight in life. It could be argued that Lennie represents innocence in a world that is full of sin.
The death of Lennie is foreshadowed in Of Mice and Men chapter three. This is first foreshadowed when Carlson shoots Candys dog to put it out of its misery. Later, the events that lead to Lennies death are foreshadowed when George reveals to Slim the events that made the two leave Weed, California.
