What about FTX customers? FTX now says that 98% of its creditors, including individual investors who had US$50,000 or less with FTX, will receive the funds they lost. Payments will be made in cash within 60 days of a reorganisation plan going into effect.
In November 2022, $477 million was stolen from FTX by an unidentified hacker, just as the exchange collapsed into bankruptcy. The thief lost $94 million in the days following the hack as they rushed to launder the funds through decentralized exchanges (DEXs), cross-chain bridges and mixers.
On Nov. 8, FTX blocked customers from taking money out of the platform by removing that option online, which meant hundreds of thousands of customers did not have access to their money. When FTX could not pay the $8 billion gap, the company filed for bankruptcy.
Tom Brady is the most famous face to promote and invest in FTX and he also may have suffered the greatest individual loss. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback owned over 1.1 million common shares of FTX Trading, which equaled about $45 million before the company went bankrupt, ing to Bloomberg.
Update: The US Department of Justice has now confirmed that FTX was the victim of the SIM swap attack that resulted in the theft of $400 million in cryptoassets. On November 11, 2022 $477 million was stolen from cryptoasset exchange FTX, just as it was collapsing into bankruptcy.
At Bankman-Frieds sentencing hearing, Kaplan agreed. He said FTXs customers had lost some $8bn and that its investors had lost $1.7bn.
Former cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison for what prosecutors said was one of the biggest financial crimes in U.S. history. Bankman-Fried was found to have stolen at least $8 billion from FTX customers.
