LaTeX does have built-in commands for changing the typeset alignment of text: ragged-right ( \raggedright ) ragged-left ( \raggedleft ) centred ( \centering )
Using LaTeX code, you can: reduce the space between the title and the text with \vspace{-1cm} reduce the top margin with the same code placed in title in the YAML.
Relative to that point the left margin in LaTeX is \oddsidemargin on odd pages and \evensidemargin on even pages. The total paper width is \paperwidth so the right margin on an odd page is \paperwidth - \textwidth - \oddsidemargin - 1in . To read and use margin lengths and the like, check this MWE.
LaTeX: preventing text from overflowing into margins Insert \allowbreak yourself. Pick a rare Unicode character for people to insert explicitly, replace it with \allowbreak yourself. Insert soft hyphens via \- (drawback: there will be hyphens at the end of the line)
The easiest way to change margins in LaTeX is by using the geometry package. To use a new package, use the \usepackage{..} function, specifying the package you want to use within curly brackets. You can specify your margins in the square brackets.
Use \nolbreaks{some text} to prevent line breaks in some text. This has the advantage over \mbox{} that glue (rubber space) remains flexible. Most common cases are handled here (\linebreak is disabled, for example) but spaces hidden in macros or { } can still create break-points.
