When you have heart failure, your heart does not pump out enough blood. This causes fluids to build up in your body. If you consume too much sodium, this can lead to fluid retention. You may get symptoms such as swelling, weight gain, and shortness of breath.
The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue or gray. Depending on your skin color, these color changes may be harder or easier to see. Some types of heart failure can lead to an enlarged heart.
In many cases , coughing is a symptom of congestive heart failure. Doctors sometimes refer to this as a cardiac cough. A cough that occurs as a symptom of heart failure is usually persistent and produces white or pink blood-tinged mucus.
Fluid can collect and cause swelling called edema in your ankles, legs, and belly. Trouble doing activities. Fatigue and shortness of breath can get in the way of your daily routine and make it hard to exercise.
A main cause of pulmonary edema is congestive heart failure. It can occur due to nonheart-related conditions, too. Symptoms include shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Sudden (acute) pulmonary edema requires immediate treatment.
Diagnostic tests for congestive heart failure may include: Resting or exercise electrocardiogram (also known as EKG, ECG, or stress test) Echocardiogram. Computed tomography (CT) scan.
In other words, it is normal to feel thirsty when you have heart failure. At the same time, it is very important to prevent dehydration because being dehydrated means your heart has to work harder to pump blood. This can cause your heart to beat faster, cause an irregular heartbeat or even palpitations.
Some people may feel fine when they get up in the morning. But by the end of the day, their lower legs, ankles and feet become swollen. If the swelling is in only one leg, that may suggest a blood clot or infection. When its related to heart failure, the swelling generally occurs in both legs.
