The Merneptah stele is considered to be the first extra-biblical reference to ancient Israel in ancient history and is widely considered to be authentic and providing historical information.
Goshen, nicknamed The Maple City, is a city in northern Indiana, United States, located 10 miles southeast of Elkhart, 115 miles east of Chicago, Illinois, and 152 miles north of Indianapolis. It is the seat of Elkhart County as well as one of two principal cities of the Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Merneptah Stele, pictured here, is an inscription written in hieroglyphs on granite during the reign of the Egyptian king Merneptah (1213-1203 BCE). It contains the earliest preserved inscriptional evidence of the name Israel (and perhaps therefore the Israelites).
Goshen is a region in Egypt where the Israelites resided for 215 years. (Genesis 47:27). While the exact location of Goshen is uncertain, it appears to have lain in the eastern part of the Nile Delta, the entrance to Egypt proper.
Not specifically, but there are some intriguing features of homes excavated in that area which have characteristic layouts of similar homes built in the hill country of Canaan (the four chambered house) which are typically associated with early Israelite settlement.
Suez Isthmus The land area north of the Gulf of Suez, all the way to the Mediterranean coast, is known today as the Isthmus of Suez. It includes the eastern Nile delta (where Goshen was located, east of the Niles Pelusiac branch; see Kitchen 2003: 254, 261), the marshy lakes to the east, and the desert beyond.
It is believed to have been located in the eastern Nile Delta, lower Egypt; perhaps at or near Avaris, the seat of power of the Hyksos kings.
The significance of the Israel Stele lies in the fact that it contains the earliest known reference to the name Israel in any ancient text. The inscription on the stele refers to a people called Israel who were defeated by the forces of Merneptah during his military campaign in Canaan.
