A JPEG file supports up to 24-bit colour and uses lossy compression to compress images for more convenient storage and sending. This may make JPEGs better for everyday use, but it does mean sacrificing some of the original image quality.
In order to reproduce the image once the file has been closed, the unique color of every pixel must be re- corded. JPEG compression attempts to create patterns in the color values in order to reduce the amount of data that needs to be recorded, thereby reducing the file size.
How much can JPG compress? If you compress image file size with the JPEG standard, the file doesnt take up as much space. In fact, JPEG lets you compress picture file size down to 5 percent of its original size. That means you can keep more files in your storage.
JPEG files (or JPG files) are a type of raster image file format that uses compression to store data, and has the file extension . jpg. This compression allows for smaller file sizes, which makes them ideal for use on the web.
The JPEG compression is a block based compression. The data reduction is done by the subsampling of the color information, the quantization of the DCT-coefficients and the Huffman-Coding (reorder and coding). The user can control the amount of image quality loss due to the data reduction by setting (or chose presets).
The DCT is sometimes referred to as DCT-II in the context of a family of discrete cosine transforms (see discrete cosine transform). It is generally the most efficient form of image compression. DCT is used in JPEG, the most popular lossy format, and the more recent HEIF.
