CSV refers to the CSV file extension, meaning any file that ends in . csv. The . csv file extension stands for comma-separated value file, and its one of the most common outputs for any spreadsheet program. A comma-separated value file refers to a file where the data is input as data separated by commas.
Check the encoding in a text editor or source code editor The following screenshot shows an example of a CSV file with rendering errors. Open your . CSV file with a text editor and check the bottom of the window for the encoding. If the encoding is not set as UTF-8, find the encoding controls in the text editor.
Files generally indicate their encoding with a file header. There are many examples here. However, even reading the header you can never be sure what encoding a file is really using. For example, a file with the first three bytes 0xEF,0xBB,0xBF is probably a UTF-8 encoded file.
The CSV file must be saved with UTF-8 or RFC-4180 encoding for special and multi-byte characters to import correctly.
Before working with a CSV file, you should determine its encoding. Python doesnt have built-in capabilities to accurately detect encoding, but there are third-party libraries like `chardet` that can guess it for you. Use chardet. detect() to analyze a sample of the file to predict the encoding.
