Deselect the checkbox Highlight the regions I can edit in Review tab, in the Protect group, Restrict Editing. Then save the file. Close the file. Reopen the file.

If its text shading the Text Highlight Color tool wont remove it but other colors will overprint it. Select the text, go to Format Borders Shading - Shading select No Color from the Fill list.
Select the text that you want to remove highlighting from, or press Ctrl+A to select all of the text in the document. Go to Home and select the arrow next to Text Highlight Color. Select No Color.
Check Word Options: There might be settings in Word that are affecting this functionality. Go to File Options. Under the Advanced tab, check the options in the Editing options section. Make sure that options like Allow text to be dragged and dropped are checked.
How to unhighlight text in Word Launch Word and find the text you want to unhighlight. Click on the highlighter tool and select No color Click and drag over the highlighted text to unhighlight it. Select all the text in the document to unhighlight. To reapply highlighter, change the highlighter to a color.
To remove highlight from a number or from a bullet, select the paragraph mark and remove the highlight. You can also select the entire paragraph or the last part of the paragraph as long as you make sure the paragraph mark is included in the selection. Then the highlight will disappear from the number/bullet.
