If you enter the ps command without using any options, you will be given a list of all processes which were started from the current shell. Other processes will not be shown in this case.
The command ps -p $$ in Linux is used to display detailed information about the current shell process. Lets break down the command: ps : This stands for process status. Its a command-line utility that provides information about the currently running processes, including their process identification numbers (PIDs).
The output of ps also tells you the process ID of the background process and the terminal from which it was run. In its basic form, ps lists the following: Process ID (PID)
The ps command offers various options and flags that allow users to filter and display specific process information. It enables users to retrieve details such as process IDs (PIDs), CPU and memory usage, parent-child process relationships, command arguments, and more.
The ps command with the -ef option can list all running processes on the system. In practice, we often dont need the entire list. Instead, we want to check the information of particular processes.
Use the --no-headers to have the header line omitted. The man page for ps clearly documents this: man ps [snip] --no-headers Print no header line at all. --no-heading is an alias for this option.
You can use the ps command to find out which processes are running and display information about those processes. The ps command has several flags that enable you to specify which processes to list and what information to display about each process.
The ps command is used to view currently running processes on the system. It helps us to determine which process is doing what in our system, how much memory it is using, how much CPU space it occupies, user ID, command name, etc .
