Go to your EC2 management console and click on Instances. Click on the instance youre curious about, and then under the Description tab, scroll down to Block devices, and click on the appropriate EBS volume. This will pop up an attribute box which will state the Delete on Termination flag.
By default, the DeleteOnTermination attribute is set to True for the root volume. It is set to False for all other volume types. To preserve the root volume when an instance terminates, change the DeleteOnTermination attribute for the root volume to False. Note: You dont incur billing costs for changing these values.
When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted. However, all the snapshots that were attached to the AMI remain and need to be deleted manually.
By default, the root EBS volume that is created and attached to an instance at launch is deleted when that instance is terminated. You can modify this behavior by changing the value of the flag DeleteOnTermination to false when you launch the instance.
If no value is specified for DeleteOnTermination , the default is true and the volume is deleted when the instance is terminated.
The Delete on Termination flag controls the deletion of the EBS volume during termination of Spot Instances: If the flag is marked, the EBS volume is deleted and if it is unmarked, the EBS volume is not deleted.
It is not possible to modify the Delete on termination value on an existing AMI. So you have 2 choices: Launch an EC2 instance from your AMI and produce a new AMI with the appropriate Delete on Terminate value, or. Modify the value when you launch the new EC2 instance.
You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. This consideration applies even if the registered AMI is deprecated or disabled. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI.
