So what is a GIF? A .gif is an image file format that stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Its an animated image that is mostly used on the web and grew in popularity due to memes and social media GIFs. As an actual file format, its pretty terrible today because of its weak compression engine, but thats quite understandable given that its latest release was in 1989, literally 32 years ago. The format supports a colour palette of up to 256 different colours, which makes it a bit limited. That was great in the 90s when it grew in popularity, but its not ideal today. Despite all that, .gif files have been compatible with any Internet browser, operating system, app or device in the world from the very beginning, which skyrocketed its popularity on the web. Today, GIF images are such a cultural phenomenon that even if we have other animated image file formats with waaaay better file size and image quality, we still cant seem to replace GIFs. Below are some common questions from our customers that may provide you with the answer you're looking for. If you can't find an answer to your question, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Source video resolution should be 720p max, but we recommend you keep it at 480p. Keep in mind media will appear mostly on small screens or smaller messaging windows.
Dithering is the most common means of reducing the color range of images down to the 256 (or fewer) colors seen in 8-bit GIF images. Dithering is the process of juxtaposing pixels of two colors to create the illusion that a third color is present.
A higher dithering percentage creates the appearance of more colors and more detail in an image, but can also increase the file size. For optimal compression, use the lowest percentage of dither that provides the color detail you require. Images with primarily solid colors may work well with no dither.
To apply a filter to your GIF, you first need to double click on it in order to add it to your timeline. Then, select it on the timeline and go to the Color tab of the Object Inspector menu to apply filters or use the color correction sliders.
Dithering may make some images look better, but it increases the file size. If your software allows it, use a lower level of dithering to save extra bytes. Some software has a lossy option for saving GIFs. This option can docHubly reduce the file size, but it also reduces image quality.
Dithering is used in computer graphics to create the illusion of color depth in images on systems with a limited color palette. In a dithered image, colors that are not available in the palette are approximated by a diffusion of colored pixels from within the available palette.
How do I cut out part of a GIF? To cut out part of a GIF, you need a GIF editor with a trimming or cutting tool. Using a GIF cutter, find sections you want to cut out of your GIF, split them, then delete the unwanted parts of the GIF.
The docHub Express GIF background remover can remove the background so that your GIF is transparent in seconds. And, you dont need any editing experience to do so. Its free to use anytime, anywhere, on both your desktop and mobile device.
