An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to entities for tax purposes. EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears.
Its also sometimes called a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) or Federal Tax Identification Number (TIN). You can think of an EIN as a Social Security number for your business. Be careful to never give out your EIN unless you need toin the wrong hands, it can be used for identity theft.
Regardless of whether or not an EIN was ever used, the number is PERMANENT. The IRS cannot cancel EIN numbers; however, the business account associated with the EIN may be closed. If the EIN is needed in the future, it will still belong to the business entity even after the account is closed.
The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise. If you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account.
A Reverse EIN lookup is conducted when you already have access to a companys Employer Identification Number but need additional information about the company. If you require information that verifies things like the company name, address, or contact details, then a reverse EIN lookup is the correct process to follow.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
Dont submit a new application if you made a mistake on your original EIN form. Instead, send a letter to the IRS explaining the error and providing the correct information. This letter should be signed by an authorized representative of your company and include your current EIN.
Automatic revocation of exemption list. The IRS publishes the list of organizations whose tax-exempt status was automatically revoked because of failure to file a required Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF or Form 990-N (e-Postcard) for three consecutive years.
