Exodus 32:31-35 New King James Version (NKJV) Yet now, if You will forgive their sinbut if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written. And the LORD said to Moses, Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
Moses is still on Mount Sinai when his time with God gets interrupted. The Israelites below have made an idol (Exodus 32:4). The idol served many roles for the people. It was a more palatable representation of Gods image than the big thundering cloud on the mountain.
Old and New Testaments (KJV and Revised Version) The Second Book of Moses, called Exodus (KJV) The second book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible), also called The Law of Moses, which contains the story of Moses who is called by God to rescue his people from oppression in Egypt.
Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. These have had their names blotted out of the book of life.
However, Moses intercedes on behalf of the people, asking God to forgive them and offering to bear the punishment himself if need be. This verse speaks to the selfless and sacrificial nature of Moses, who was willing to give up his own place in Gods book of life if it meant saving his people.
When God is furious with the rebellious Israelites, Moses argues on the peoples behalf. He does so on the basis of what God himself had already promisedto deliver Israel from Egypt out of faithfulness to his covenant with Abraham, and to show that he is truly God.
This idiom, first recorded in 1516, uses the verb to blot in the sense of making something illegible by spotting or staining it with ink. The New Testament has it (Acts 3:19): Repent ye that your sins may be blotted out.
It is not clear which book Moses has in mind when he says Your book which you have written. Moses could be referring to a book that logs who is living and who is dead. He could be offering his physical life to atone for the sins of the people.
