The very first Magic cards ever produced were playtest cards that Richard used privately to determine the proper gameplay. Once he felt that he had a suitable selection of cards, he created a hand-drawn 120 card deck, known as the Alpha playtest cards.
An Alpha Black Lotus, graded by CGC Cards, just fetched a jaw-dropping $3 MILLION, making it the highest-priced Magic: The Gathering card ever sold! The transaction went down in a private sale between Adam Cai of Pristine Collectibles and a mystery buyer, shattering previous records.
Limited Edition Alpha, commonly known as Alpha, is the first print run of Limited Edition, the first core set of Magic: The Gathering. Alpha contains 295 black-bordered cards and was released on August 5, 1993.
While the game was simply called Magic through most of playtesting, when the game had to be officially named a lawyer informed them that the name Magic was too generic to be trademarked. Mana Clash was instead chosen to be the name used in the first solicitation of the game.
Created in 1993, MAGIC: THE GATHERING is the worlds first trading card game. Players take turns battling one another by casting spells, summoning creatures and using artifacts depicted on individual cards drawn from their personalized decks. Highly strategic gameplay that is customizable to any individuals playstyle.
Everyone kept calling it Magic so they looked into what they needed to do to call it Magic. The answer was to add something to it to make it more unique. Richard chose The Gathering as a sub-name signifying the beginning, as the plan was to keep changing the sub-names.
Gathering could refer to a gathering of wizards, as the original thematic premise of the game was that the players were a group of powerful wizards who were engaged in a magical dual, flinging spells at each other and summoning creatures to fight.
Garfield first became passionate about games when he played the roleplaying game Dungeons Dragons, so he designed Magic decks to be customizable like roleplaying characters. Garfield and Magic are both in the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame.
