Crooks is so named because of a crooked back caused by a kick from a horse. Crooks is the stable hand who takes care of the horses and lives by himself because he is the only black man on the ranch. Along with Candy, Crooks is a character used by Steinbeck to show the effects of discrimination.
The boss is suspicious when George talks for Lennie. He thinks George is taking advantage of Lennie, maybe even stealing his wages. How does the boss react to Lennies silence? They travel together, George takes care of Lennie, but the boss really thinks that George is taking advantage of Lennie.
Crooks berates Lennie until Lennie threatens to do him physical harm; Crooks accuses Curleys wife of being a tramp; and she, in turn, threatens to have him lynched.
The boss believes that George is speaking for Lennie because he assumes that George is taking advantage of Lennie and tricking him out of his pay. This is a theme frequently explored by John Steinbeck in his novel Of Mice and Men.
The boss is suspicious of the situation. He asks George what his stake is, thinking that George is taking advantage of Lennie by taking the money he earns. George lies and says Lennie is his cousin, that he got kicked in the head by a horse, and that he promised to take care of him.
The boss suspects George of taking Lennies pay away from him.
In chapter 6, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away. The other men intend to torture him before they kill him, so George takes Curleys gun and heads off to find him. Fortunately, he finds Lennie before the rest of the men and has a few moments with him to bring him joy before he kills him out of mercy.
The boss is suspicious of George and Lennie because they travel together, revealing that he prefers his workers to be isolated and alone. Although the boss is a pretty nice fella, his son, Curley, is aggressive and preys on the weak, especially Lennie.
